Animals with special needs

July 10, 2009

Are some of the most loving pets you will ever have. I did not set out to adopt cats with special needs. They just found me. The shelter where the late Bailey Brave found me labeled her as a “special needs” cats because someone declawed her on all four paws. (Read my blog tribute to Bailey Brave here.)

Christopher Robeson, my three-leg feline wonder, found me when I was sitting on the front porch. Actually Bailey found Christopher relaxing on her tree stump. At Bailey’s urging I went to investigate and arrived just in time to see Christopher limping away. I thought he was injured so I grabbed my glasses to take a closer look. That’s when I noticed he only had three legs. I formally adopted him after I received no responses to my on-line and newspaper ”Found Cat” ads, and when the vet told me he had no microchip. Sometimes I forget he has only three legs. When he runs across the yard no one notices he’s running on three, not four, legs. And he’s my best mouser.

LittleKittyEb found me by acting as Christopher’s shadow. I opened the front door to let Christopher in and before I knew it this little black cat, with a crook in his tail, wandered in too, literally on Christopher’s tail — and he wouldn’t leave. Upon arriving, LittleKittyEb infected me with his ringworm, but when the vet told me he had no microchip either he became a member of my little family. He also suffers from separation anxiety and had an indoor spraying issue for a while. Thank goodness that habit is pretty much gone now.

So what, you ask, prompted this subject? This morning I met a man walking his black lab — a black lab with three legs. I told the man that I had a cat with three legs. We exchanged a few stories about animals with missing legs as the black lab relaxed at the man’s feet. I swear that dog was smiling.
